You are looking at a penitent.

As you look around, you may see penitents approaching you. These projected figures bring to life a centuries-old tradition in Malta.

Penitents have expressed devotion, repentance, or fulfilled a sacred vow through acts of sacrifice.

This tradition lives on during Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter, when some walk barefoot or carry chains in solemn processions.

The chains remind us that everyone carries burdens.

Some are chosen.

Others are placed upon us.

Yet what we carry – and how we bear it – shapes who we become.
